Introducing the World’s Most Accurate Thermal Mass Flow Meter

From Sierra’s beginning over forty years ago, my Dad and Sierra’s founder, Dr. John G. Olin was driven by the vision of supplying industrial customers with the world’s most accurate thermal mass flow meter. And, he knew that it was a “sensor” game.

The development of an industrialized metal-sheathed sensor in the early 80s was Sierra’s first big step, but Dr. Olin is a driven innovator, and this was only the beginning for someone who saw “Thermal Mass Flow” as his life’s work. Many successful innovations followed, but in 1999 Sierra experienced a major breakthrough with the introduction of our patented no-drift DrySense™ thermal mass velocity sensor.  I then recognized we were on the cusp of realizing my Dad’s life-long vision.

Realizing the Vision

Thermal technology, by its very nature, uses the physics of heat transfer and conservation of energy in a closed system to measure mass flow rate. This means that for a thermal mass flow meter to achieve the greatest accuracy, it must solve the First Law of Thermodynamics (Heat Energy In = Heat Energy Out) for each data point.

As you can imagine, solving the First Law in a flow instrument was no easy task. By Dr. Olin’s own accounting, decades of “hard-nosed dedication to excellence” by himself and Sierra’s engineering team, years of testing, and his stack of yellow note pads over five feet high, jammed with his handwritten equations and designs, finally yielded the secret in the form of two revolutionary new technologies; QuadraTherm™ and iTherm™ both patented worldwide.

The Sierra Flat-Trak™ Model 780S flow body eliminates velocity profile distortions, swirl and temperature stratifications in the gas stream and reduces the amount of upstream piping required for accurate flow measurement.

The versatile microprocessor-based transmitter integrates the functions of flow measurement, flow-range adjustment, meter validation and diagnostics, in either a probe-mounted or remote housing. Mass flow rate and totalised flow, as well as other configuration variables, are displayed on the meter’s optional 2 x 12 LCD display.

Flow Conditioning Plates

Sierra Instruments’ Flow Conditioning Plates represent an economical solution to problems associated with monitoring flow installations where long, straight runs of piping are not available. The flow conditioning element effectively eliminates velocity profile distortions, swirl and temperature stratification in the gas stream. The flow conditioner creates a uniform velocity profile by means of two stainless steel perforated plates. Designed to work in schedule 40 pipe ( other schedules contact factory) with 150# flanges, the front flow conditioning screen is sandwiched between two 150# flanges, along with two 1/8” gaskets (gaskets and flanges are supplied by customer). The flange mounting bolts serve to center the screen in place.

Sierra Instruments’ Model 826/827 High-Flow Top-Trak® accurately measures the mass flow rate of most clean gases.

Available in flow ranges from 0 to 75 slpm up to 0 to 175 slpm. Wetted surfaces are anodized aluminum with Viton® “O” rings, and all are corrosion- resistant.

The Model 826/827 measures and displays the mass flow rate directly in sccm or slpm. The instrument is available with our without a digital display, which is tilt- able over 180° for easy viewing and can be removed for remote panel mounting.

A 0 to 5 VDC or 4 to 20 mA output signal linearly proportional to gas mass flow rate is provided for recording, data-logging or control. A 9-pin “D” connector for the output signal, input power, and remote display drive is standard.


Top-Trak Model 822S

Sierra Instruments’ Top-Trak™ Model 820S is designed for precise measurement of any process gas in ranges from 0 to 10 sccm to 0 to 500 slpm. Because all wetted materials are 316 stainless steel, the device accom- modates most clean gases, including corrosives.

The Model 820S measures and displays the mass flow rate directly in any user defined gas mass units. The instru- ment display is tiltable over 180° for easy viewing and can be removed for remote panel mounting. A 0 to 5 VDC or 4 to 20 mA linearly output signal proportional to gas mass flow rate is provided for recording, data-logging or control.

Top-Trak’s outstanding accuracy is a function of a high-stability platinum flow sensor. This sensor has been continuously tested for over two years. The maximum deviation (drift) during that time was less than 0.5%. The sensor’s large internal diameter also prevents the clogging and contamination often associated with capillary type thermal mass flow meters.

Sierra Instruments’ Top-Trak Model 820 Mass Flow Meter is designed to replace volumetric flow rate devices at a comparable installed cost.

No temperature or pressure corrections are required, as in the case of most other flow monitoring devices, such as rotometers, turbine meters or critical orifices.

Available in flow ranges from 0 to 10 sccm up to 0 to 50 slpm, Top-Trak is suitable for any clean gas flow measurement application. Wetted surfaces are rugged 316 stainless steel, nickel plating, 6/6 reinforced Nylon® and Viton® “O” rings; all are corrosion-resistant.

The Model 820 measures and displays the mass flow rate directly in sccm or slpm. The integral instrument display is tiltable over 180° for easy viewing and can be removed for remote panel mounting. A 0 to 5 VDC or 4 to 20 mA output signal linearly proportional to gas mass flow rate is provided for recording, data-logging or control.

This device is widely used in a variety of flow validation and calibration applications-by dozens of instrument OEMs and in a multitude of laboratory, test and analytical operations.


Mass-Trak Model 810C

Sierra Instruments’ Mass-Trak Model 810C offers exceptional mass flow control capabilities at an attractive price.

Available in any range from 0 to 10 sccm to 0 to 50 slpm, the Model 810C is suitable for any clean, non-corrosive gas flow control application.

Mass-Trak’s on-board display and local set point poten- tiometer allows for adjustment of the command signal from the face of the instrument enclosure and eliminates the need for external readout/set point electronics.

The instrument also offers a switch-selectable remote set point capability from either a 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 5 VDC command signal, which can be easily interfaced with a process control system or workstation.


Ultra High Purity Model 780S

Chlorine-Trak 760S

The Chlorine-Trak™ 760S has been specifically designed to perform as an accurate and cost-effective mass flow measurement solution for chlorine injection processes found in typical waste- water treatment applications.

Given the corrosive nature of chlorine gas (particularly in the presence of moisture), finding an economical measurement solution posed a great challenge to the industry.

To answer this challenge, Sierra has designed a flow body manufactured from Kynar ® polyvinylidene fluoride resin (PVDF).

This material offers excellent corrosion and chemical resistance at both ambient and elevated temperatures. PVDF is also inherently stable, mechanically tough, and abrasion and flame resistant.


Multi-Trak Model 670S

Sierra’s Multi-Trak™ Model 670S is an advanced state-of-the-art instrument for measuring mass flow rates in very large ducts or stacks that have non-uniform velocity profiles, high turn-down requirements, dirty gas streams, wide temperature ranges and fast velocity and temperature changes.

The Multi-Trak™ dynamically compensates for changes in the flow profile by using up to four independent mass flow sensing points to measure the instantaneous average gas mass flow velocity.

The Multi-Trak™ is commonly used in petrochemical refining, coal-fired electric power generation, steel manufacturing and many other industrial processes that face the challenge of accurate and repeatable gas mass flow measurement in very large pipes or ducts.

An innovative, versatile and user-friendly microprocessor-based Human Machine Interface (HMI) controls all functions of the Model 670S system.

The HMI is used to collect, visualize and store flow data, as well as set up the individual sensor points, thus allowing the entire system to be easily configured in the field.

The Multi-Trak™ HMI integrates the functions of flow measurement, flow-range adjustment, field validation and diagnostics, and displays mass flow rate and totalized flow, as well as other configuration variables. All of this data is easily programmable from the HMI’s easy-to-use touch screen.

Fast-Flo Model 620S

The Fast-Flo Model 620S Immersible Thermal Mass Flow Meter provides an economical solution for gas flow measurement applications.  The meter’s sensor offers long-term reliability and 200 millisecond response to changes in flow rate.

The versatile microprocessor-based transmitter ntegrates the functions of flow-range adjustment, meter validation and diagnostics in a probe-mounted NEMA 4X IP65) housing. Mass flow rate and totalized flow, as well as other configuration variables, can be displayed on the meter’s optional 2 x 12 backlit LCD panel.

The meter also provides an optical/galvanic isolated 4-20 mA output and two alarm outputs. The programmable ransmitter is easily configured via RS-232 and Sierra’s Smart Interface™ Windows™ based software or three push buttons in the device. The Model 620S is suitable for pipes or ducts from 2-inches to 48-inches (DN50 to DN1200).


Innova-Switch 615 Series

Level Switches

The Innova-Switch 615 Series from Sierra Instruments represents the State-of-the-art in gaseous and liquid flow switching or liquid level control and continues the Sierra tradition of providing the highest quality mass flow meters and controllers in the industry.

Flow and level detection is accomplished by using a high-resolution thermal differential technique. The sensor consists of a pair of matched Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD’s). One RTD is self-heated using a constant DC current. The other RTD is unheated and provides an accurate process temperature reference. The thermal differential created between the reference and the heated RTD pair is a function of the density and/or velocity of the media with which the sensor is in contact.

The sensor and wetted parts are of durable 316L stainless steel, all welded construction with no moving parts. The switch is easy to install and adjust, giving reliable, low maintenance performance in the most demanding applications.

SmartTrak 140

Use the SmartTrak 140 when you need precise mass flow control of expensive process gases, where minimal pressure drop is a key consideration for cost savings and efficiency.

The SmartTrak® 140 controls up to 500 slpm with an ultra- low ΔP of 4.5 psid (310 mBard), much better than typical ΔP values of 25 psid (1700 mBard) for equivalent mass flow controllers on the market. Precision digital PID valve control means no manual adjustment or tuning.

The SmartTrak 140 mass flow controller is a hybrid of two innovative Sierra technologies: our award winning SmartTrak® 100 Series with its industry leading SmartTrak Laminar Flow Element (LFE), sensor and digital electronics is combined with our SideTrak® 840 low ΔP valve featuring large flow coefficient (Cv).

Compod for Sierra 100 Series

Compod™ is a programmable control module for Sierra Instruments’ 100 Series. Compod for Sierra 100 Series makes Smart-Trak® even smarter.

The Compod™ mounts to any Sierra Smart-Trak® Model 100, converting the instrument’s internal RS-232 communications into multi- drop RS-485/MODBUS RTU. With MODBUS, multiple instruments can be daisy-chained over a single network.

When used with a PLC or master computer, each instrument equipped with Compod becomes a node on the MODBUS network, capable of sending and receiving data and commands. Even complex process control systems can be automated with the power of Compod and Sierra’s Smart-Trak Model 100.

Users can utilize Sierra’s included software or write proprietary software using open-source MODBUS protocol to configure standard functions for the Smart-Trak. Compod’s two digital output channels, analog input channel and configurable pulse output channel can automate gas processes without the need for an external PLC or computer.

With these advanced capabilities, Smart-Trak with Compod can easily be integrated into complete process control systems.


MicroTrak 101
